Faias São Lourenço

Doing the Beech Route to Faias de São Lourenço is like entering the set of a film set in an enchanted forest.

The Faia Route allows you to discover something new and surprising at every turn, from the splendid vegetation to the stunning landscapes, which, together with agriculture and livestock farming, provide the perfect route for those who wish to get to know the mountains, their people and customs. Its name comes from the fact that this route delves into the interior of a dense beech forest, planted by the Manteigas Forestry Service at the beginning of the 20th century.

Autumn is without a doubt the best season of the year to explore this beautiful forest, where golden colours dominate a silence that leaves us captivated.

At the top of the mountain, the Chapel of São Lourenço stands out, not only for the panorama you can enjoy from it, but also for the implications that history raises. Rebuilt in the 17th century, recently restored, tradition has it that the Chapel was located in Sicó. However, one day the image of Saint Lawrence disappeared from the Chapel and was found in the place where he is today venerated. On the other hand, the Chapel is surrounded by oak trees and on the Summer Solstice, those in Manteigas see the sun rise over S. Lourenço. This panorama leads us to believe that pagan cults were practiced there, linked to the worship of trees and the sun. It is also important to note that the image of the Saint is probably from the 14th century, carved in Ançã stone. In addition to this species, there are also chestnut trees, broom trees, Oregon pine trees and the imposing monumental oak trees.

The Beech Route makes it possible to discover something new and surprising at every moment, from the splendid vegetation to brilliant landscapes, which together with agriculture and pastoralism provide a perfect tour for those who want to get to know the mountains, their people and customs.

More than a walking trail, the Rota das Faias is a sensory experience, where the smells of rosemary, wild mint, lavender and thyme merge with magnificent paintings that surround the gaze of those who observe them.
